Where and When Does Your Troop Meet?

It’s so good to be back here! The kids are at school and now I can focus on getting back into the groove.

I recently received and email from our school district’s coordinator giving me my meeting dates. Next Friday is our first one of the year! I am so excited and will start planning over the weekend, as my daughter will want to help me with this.

We meet in our school’s Art Room, immediately after school on the first and third Fridays of the month. I arrive about ten minutes before the bell rings to unlock the door (I need to go to the office to get the keys from the secretary and then return them) and then put all of my supplies in. Then I wait in front of the office for my girls.

I am a familiar site in my school, and I have always offered our services to the teachers, but to date I have had no takers. It’s a shame, as I want my girls to contribute to the school in other ways, and they really want to help! Maybe the fifth grade teachers will want some extra hands. I will have to ask next week.

Our meetings is about 90 minutes, including a brief snack that we eat outside in the hall. The girls know that meeting in school is a privilege that can be taken away if we do not treat the room properly.

I know of troops in other areas who have to beg for space or even rent it out.  I am very luck my Service Unit does this work for me.  I will in no way let them down.

So my questions for you are:

When do you meet?

How often do you meet?

Has the time increased as your girls have gotten older?

  • 2nd yr. Juniors.
2nd and 4th Tuesday in the school cafeteria for 1 hour and 45 minutes. I think we have always met for that long.

    • That is a little shorter than us. Because of my girl’s and co-leader’s after school schedules, I cannot extend the time any longer.

  • I have first year Juniors; however, this year we are trying a multi-level troop – Daisys, Brownies, and Juniors. We meet at a Church the 2nd and 4th Thursdays from 6:30 – 8:00. And we have increased our time as the girls got older. Daisys were only 45 minutes, then we went to an hour and 15 minutes, and now an hour and a half. I’m concerned about the 1 1/2 hours for the younger ones, though. We’ve only had one meeting as a multi-level troop, so we will see how it all works out.

    • Oh, my! You have taken on quite a task! The Girl Scout Moms forum at babycenter.com has lots of help for multi-level troops. Good luck and if you would like to guest post about it, please do! I would love other readers to learn from someone who is doing something like this!

  • Hi, I am so excited to find your site. We are starting up a new Junior troop and there is so much to learn/remember. I am a former scout and leader but it’s bee 18 years, LOL. Thank you so very much for sharing your scouting life experiences.

    • Thank you, Kelly! The archives are a great place to start. We will be doing a Journey and the Bronze Award this year, so I will be sharing our progress on the blog. Please let me know if I can help you in any other way!

  • I have a 2nd year Brownie troop. We meet 1st & 3rd Sundays from 3-4:30 at a local Ruritan club. We have had a hard time keeping places to meet.
