Last week my Girl Scout troop went on a weekend of overnight camping. It was for Girl Scouts of all levels in our local Council, and everyone from Daisy Girl Scouts to Ambassadors were there. Each level had its own activities to do, and we were lucky enough to spend time with another local troop with four older girls-two Seniors and two Ambassadors. The girls all go to the same high school, so it was nice for them to hang out and do all sorts of fun things together like archery, rock climbing, and ziplining. They even worked together to run a games program for Daisy Scouts.

One of the things I noticed one of the Daisy Scout troops had were these adorable and easy to make Sit Upons. Years ago, my Brownie troop made Sit Upons using Dollar Store plastic table covers. They were useful for the time we used them, but of course, they did not last forever.

Here is an easy Girl Scout Sit Upon that this Daisy troop used. I loved it not only because they were bright and colorful and each girl could clearly see which bag was hers, but nylon tote bags have handles, making them very easy to carry. Plus, leaders could make this with their girls in a fun and hands on meeting.

Materials

Nylon tote bag

Solid color duct tape

Newspaper or poly fiberfill

First, you will want to decide if the girls will buy their own tote bag or if you will buy them with your troop funds.  If you are getting the girls the same kind of tote bag to simplify your leader life (and I am all for that, as you know!), then the duct tape needs to be a very light color so that you can write the girls’ names in Sharpie to differentiate them. Write it on both sides. The girls can even use Sharpie to make decorations on the border once it is taped to individualize them.

You can stuff the Sit Upons with the Sunday paper-easy and cheap and guess what…you can earn the green Daisy petal Use Resources Wisely if you are doing this with a Daisy troop! No need to crush and crumple the paper-the girls can just slide in a few sections and then duct tape it closed. Then they can write their names and decorate them.

Or you can use fiberfill to make them extra fluffy.

Making a Girl Scout Sit Upon is also a step in all of the Girl Scout Way badges, since it is a tradition.
