Updated January 2024

There are three Girl Scout holidays on the calendar. The first is Girl Scout Founder’s Day, which takes place on October 31st. The second is World Thinking Day, which is February 22nd.

The third holiday is Girl Scout Week, which takes place around the same time each year in March. It always falls sometime during the week of March 12th, which is the day Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scout movement.

When is Girl Scout Week 2023?

This year, Girl Scout Week 2023 takes place from March 12th through March 18th.

When a troop celebrates Girl Scout Week, most of the activities are individual. The exception to that is when a girl goes to her place of worship to celebrate to participate in the service. This year, those dates are:

Girl Scout Sunday (Christian)—Sunday, March 12, 2023
Girl Scout Jummah (Muslim)—Friday, March 17, 2023
Girl Scout Sabbath/Shabbat (Jewish)—Friday/Saturday, March 17–18, 2023

Girl Scout Week 2023 Celebrate Faith Resources

*Please note: While the dates say 2022, everything still applies and the PDFs are still downloadable.

From the GSUSA website:

Girl Scout Week is a time when we shout our Girl Scout pride from the rooftops! It’s also a time when many troops celebrate the connections between Girl Scouting and their faith, learn more about other faiths, and thank faith partners for their support throughout the year. Girls can join in the festivities on three specially designated dates (or a day of your choosing).

At the GSUSA website, there is an entire page of activities for girls of all faiths.

Find all of the information here.

There is also a guidebook called Girl Scout Week Sensitive Issues and FAQs from Girl Scouts Carolina Peaks to Piedmont. This will help leaders who have troops of girls with diverse faiths and also answer some questions about topics that leaders sometimes face

Girl Scout Week is an Optional Activity

While it is fun for your girls to celebrate Girl Scout Week, it is an optional activity and always has been. This is because this is an individual thing to do and not a troop activity led by a leader. The girls in your troop need family support in order to accomplish the daily activity, especially when they are younger.

If a girl opts out of doing this, no need for you to stress. I had girls not participate and they did not get their Girl Scout Week patch from our Council. No lost sleep here.

Why Should Your Troop Should Participate in Girl Scout Week 2023

Girl Scout Week is all about celebrating the founding of the Girl Scouts of America in 1912.  Without Juliette Gordon Low, there would be no Girl Scout organization!  This book, Juliette Gordon Low, America’s First Girl Scout, can open up a great discussion about how girlhood was different back in the 1860’s.   It does not go into detail about her marital problems, just that her husband died.  Simple, easy to read and perfect for younger Girl Scouts!

Recognizing that we are a special group of girls with a common bond is one reason to celebrate. There are activities each child can do to highlight the importance of scouting and how it helps their local and global community.

My local Service Team has made a concerted effort over the past few years to get our Council’s Girl Scout troops involved in this celebration. Troops can choose to participate, and most do. Each troop makes a poster about why being a Girl Scout is a great thing. In the past when they were younger, my troop has made posters that feature them on various trips and doing different activities.

I went back to my previous blog posts about Girl Scout Week activities and updated them. The links in each post are still viable. As always, ignore the date on the charts and sites I have linked to. The activities are all that matter and are still very useful!

One thing new leaders need to remember is that these resources are a guide. Always do what works for your troop and for you. You can combine different activities from these lists or make up your own. You can also check your Council website to see if there are any activities or events that your troop can participate in.
